Admissions, documents, English requirements and everything else you need to know before studying in the United States.

Frequently asked questions

To get admission to a university in the United States, you must apply directly to the institution and apply for a student visa (F-1 visa) through the U.S. Department of State.

Here are the general steps:

  • Choose your preferred course and university.
  • Submit an application to the institution (usually through a portal like CommonApp or directly).
  • Receive and accept an offer of admission.
  • Apply for an F-1 student visa through the U.S. embassy or consulate.
  • Receive your I-20 form and F-1 visa approval.

You must meet specific entry requirements, which may include:

  • Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.).
  • Proof of financial resources to support your studies.
  • Academic qualifications (GPA, standardized test scores such as SAT or ACT).
  • Health insurance (some universities may require this).

To apply for a student visa (F-1 visa) and get admission to U.S. universities, you will generally need the following documents:

  • Completed university application form.
  • Letter of acceptance (I-20 form) from a U.S. institution.
  • Valid passport.
  • Proof of sufficient financial resources.
  • Proof of English language proficiency.
  • Completed F-1 visa application form (DS-160).
  • SEVIS fee payment receipt.
  • Visa interview appointment confirmation.

Most U.S. universities require non-native English speakers to submit proof of English proficiency. The most common tests accepted are:

  • IELTS: Generally, a minimum score of 6.5 overall is required for undergraduate programs, and 7.0 or higher for postgraduate programs.
  • TOEFL: A minimum score of 79-80 for undergraduate programs and 90-100 for postgraduate programs is typically required.

The following English proficiency tests are commonly accepted by U.S. universities:

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English)
  • Duolingo English Test (accepted by some universities)

Be sure to check the specific requirements for the university and program you're applying to.

For an F-1 visa, the U.S. government requires that you demonstrate sufficient proficiency in English to study in the U.S. While the visa itself does not specify a minimum test score, you must meet the admission requirements of your chosen university.

  • Most undergraduate programs require a minimum of 6.5 in IELTS or 80 in TOEFL iBT.
  • Most postgraduate programs require a minimum of 7.0 in IELTS or 90-100 in TOEFL iBT.
